There is currently around 40 Francophone schools in Alberta.They are managed according to their geographical location by four French-speaking school boards: the Centre-Est School Board, the Centre-Nord School Board, the Nord-Ouest School Board N°1, and the FrancoSud School Board.
They provide education in French as a first language from kindergarten to grade 12, according to the curriculum prescribed by Alberta Education, which is the department of education in Alberta.
Elementary and secondary education
Francophone schools in Alberta offer a variety of services that contribute to the development of young people in their environment: reception for immigrant families, free school transportation from kindergarten to grade 12, full-time kindergarten, pre-kindergarten, early literacy, francization, daily physical activity, sports teams, music, theatre and fine arts, professional and technological studies, academic and vocational guidance, distance education, extracurricular activities, provincial, national and international educational trips, etc.
Professional services are also available to meet the special needs of students: speech-language pathologists, social behaviour counsellors, home-school liaison officers, special education counsellors, psychologists, educational counsellors, nurses, occupational therapists; physiotherapists, reading specialists, etc.
The La Fédération des Conseils Scolaires Francophones de l’Alberta (FCSFA)in partnership with the four school boards, created video clips to promote Francophone education in Alberta. Various topics are discussed, such as the benefits of a first language education in French, the activities offered and the pride to speak at least two languages. Watch these videos.
The Centre-Nord School Board has developed a tool to help take care of refugee students in a situation of great academic delay, It can be used anywhere in the province.
Post-secondary education
Post-secondary education is provided at the Campus Saint Jean, Francophone branch affiliated with the Univeristy of Alberta. According to your interest, you can choose to follow a collegial training or direct you towards a bachelor’s or master’s degree.
