Discounts
Stores often promote their products, in newspapers, through flyers distributed in your mailbox, on their website and social media. Most of the time, flyers offer discount coupons that you must cut out and take with you to get the promised discount at checkout.
Taxes
When you make a purchase for an item, taxes are added to the displayed item price. In Alberta, there is only the federal tax (GST: Goods and services tax) of 5% to add.
Online shopping
There are several advantages and risks in shopping online.
When you are not sure about an online purchase with a company, inquire before with trusted friends. Check that the company you want to make an online purchase with has security measures in place to protect your personal and banking information during the transaction.
Before giving out your bank information, credit card number or debit card number, first make sure that you are using a secure internet connection.
To do this, search the web page for an address starting with https://. The letter "S" means that the connection is secure. The closed padlock symbol in the address bar also ensures a secure connection.
